Fans of Red Queen will be glad to know that the author has announced the launch of a new book. Tempest, which is due for release on the 8th of September, is Aveyard’s debut in the adult fiction world. It’s also going to be the very first instalment of The Lyrian Sea duology, which tells the tale of a romantic pirate fantasy. The second novel is due to come out in Summer 2027.
The Allure of Pirates in the Modern Day
Aveyard’s new announcement comes at a perfect time, especially when you consider how dominating pirates are in modern media. Black Sails was a monumental success, scoring an 84% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Heavy metal band Alestorm also covers the pirate theme and has embarked on many worldwide tours in its time. The band is also set to play the Wacken Festival in August, 2026. Visions of Atlantis are experiencing a similar level of success and have toured extensively since the release of their last album, Pirates II.
Slingo games online also utilize the pirate theme, with an example being Slingo Pirates’ Treasure. This title features pirate ships, treasure chests, and black flags, all of which are synonymous with pirates and their journeys across the seas. Even though pirates tend to be associated with action and adventure, Aveyard’s new book is instead focused more on romantic pirate fantasy.
The Story of Tempest
In Tempest, as explained by Harper Collins, Cat Rose, who was once the wife of a lord in the Meridian Empire, is now the queen of a pirate tavern. She’s faced with an ultimatum: either turn on the only person she has ever loved or die.
The author has since confirmed that she was once working on an entirely different novel that had a very small pirate storyline, but as time went on, she came to the conclusion that pirates deserved their own storyline. She said that she wanted to create something quite literary. However, after sending an idea to her agent, who then told her to go ahead and write a pirate book, she couldn’t help but agree.
The deluxe edition of the hardcover, for those who want to spend the extra, comes with stencilled edges as well as an illustrated endpaper.
The story flits back and forth to show different phases of the characters and their evolution, but at the same time, it’s got a really good balance, keeping up the momentum for the reader while also keeping particular details reserved for later on. As the book is going to be a duology, the second book is well underway and not only continues the events of the first, but also sheds some additional light on the events that took place.
This is a great way to ensure that readers stay hooked, and when the second one is released, there’s also going to be a double boxed set. For those who would much rather hold off and buy the two books together, this could be quite the collector’s item, especially if the books end up taking off, as her previous work has done.
