Books have the ability to alter our perspective on how we view the world. For many students, reading serves as much more than a pastime; it serves as a source of ideas, creativity and bravery. Several books that not only entertain us but also encourage us all to have greater ambition, go farther foreign and study abroad.

The following selections of books have motivated numerous students to step out of their comfort zones and experience new cultures as well as pursue educational opportunities in various countries around the world. An ageless tale on following your dream(s). The book encourages the reader to listen to” their hearts” and to go forth into the unknown. The protagonist, Santiago, leaves his home in search of Pursuing his dreams and is reminded that on this path many times he will learn / realize valuable life lessons, including; courage, failure, purpose.

A lesson students can draw from; Studying abroad takes faith = belief that your journey will lead you to something/greater than what you imagine.

A powerful memoir about an isolated, strict family in rural America who raised/gave birth to a woman that eventually got into and attended Cambridge University, Represents the way that education can change/redefine our lives. 

A lesson that all students can take away from this book, Your education is your freedom and gives you the opportunity to redefine your life no matter where your life began.

  1. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince

While at first glance The Little Prince appears to be a children’s story, upon deeper reflection it is a philosophical work based on the ideas of curiosity, imagination and understanding others.

This book serves as a reminder for students intending to go abroad, to maintain an open heart and an inquisitive mind when engaging with people from different cultures.

Lesson for students: The most valuable part of your study abroad experience is the development of your ability to see the world through the eyes of another.

  1. Cheryl Strayed’s Wild

Cheryl Strayed’s journey of resilience and self-discovery mirrors the experience of studying abroad. After struggling personally, Cheryl hiked the Pacific Crest Trail solo. The emotional challenges experienced while hiking include; feeling lonely, uncertainty and ultimately becoming empowered and independent.

In this sense, On The Road is both a growth and development journey as well as a spiritual experience. More specifically, the book conveys the thrill and excitement of venturing into the unknown, which is very similar to the thrill and excitement that most international students experience when they first arrive at college.

Into The Wild, a book written by Jon Krakauer, tells the true story of Christopher McCandless, who left an unsuccessful life behind in order to explore different countries and find authenticity. To some degree, Christopher’s story ends tragically, but it is an inspiring book that reflects his struggle for independence, growth, and discovery.

The Message for Students: Study abroad is not simply an escape from your old life; study abroad will help you discover and understand the new culture you are studying in.
